Getting Involved

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), states that children and young people have a right to participate in the decision making processes that are relevant to their lives; and a right to influence the decisions made in their regard within the family, the school or the community. In particular to be provided the opportunity to be heard in any judicial and administrative proceedings affecting the child, either directly, or through an advocate.

When talking of participation and empowerment it means giving all children and young people the opportunity to be involved in decision-making at all levels. This means having a say in anything that affects them. It means being listened to and knowing that what children and young people say will be taken seriously and acted upon.

Back in 2005, the Government held a competition asking young people to sum up participation in one sentence and this is what they came up with:

"Participation means it is my right to have the opportunity to be involved in making decisions, planning and reviewing an action that might affect me. Having a Voice, Having a Choice - My Voice, My Choice."
